  1. Method of producing three-dimensional (3-D)
  2. images by means of laser light. Although the
  3. possibility of holography was suggested as
  4. early as 1947, it could not be demonstrated
  5. until a pure coherent light source, the
  6. laser, became available 1963. Holography uses
  7. a photographic technique (involving the
  8. splitting of a laser beam into two beams) to
  9. produce a picture, or hologram, that contains
  10. 3-D information about the object
  11. photographed. Some holograms show meaningless
  12. patterns in ordinary light and produce a 3-D
  13. image only when laser light is projected
  14. through them, but reflection holograms
  15. produce images when ordinary light is
  16. reflected from them (as found on credit
  17. cards). The technique of holography is also
  18. applicable to sound, and bats may navigate by
  19. ultrasonic holography. Holographic techniques
  20. also have applications in storing dental
  21. records, detecting stresses and strains in
  22. construction and in retail goods, and
  23. detecting forged paintings and documents.
